WARSAW, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Poland will receive nearly 44 billion euros (about 52 billion U.S. dollars) from the European Union (EU)'s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program for defense investments, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday.
Tusk said the European Commission approved Poland's application for funds from the SAFE instrument on Monday afternoon.
Poland was among the initiators of the SAFE project and will be its largest beneficiary, Tusk said, adding that the amount earmarked for Poland exceeds the annual defense budgets of some EU member states, including Spain and Italy.
The SAFE instrument, approved in May 2025, is part of the EU's broader effort to enhance its collective defense capabilities. Valued at 150 billion euros, the program aims to boost joint production and procurement of defense equipment. (1 euro = 1.19 U.S. dollars)
