Symbolic protest from La Liga players against Villarreal-Barcelona match in Miami

MADRID, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Players from Spain's La Liga and Liga Hypermotion (second division) announced on Friday a symbolic protest against La Liga's decision to stage the Matchday 20 fixture between Villarreal and FC Barcelona in Miami.

The Spanish Players' Union (AFE) released a statement declaring that at the start of each match, teams will not play for the opening seconds to emphasize the "lack of transparency, dialogue and coherence from La Liga."

The AFE expressed frustration that their members were not consulted about a plan requiring Barcelona and Villarreal players to endure two exhausting 10-hour transatlantic flights just before the Christmas break, raising concerns over increased injury risk.

The Union also stated that "although they share the main position and the key points," Barcelona and Villarreal players won't be taking part in the protest "to avoid the protest could be interpreted as a possible measure against any club."

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick discussed the Miami game in his Friday press conference, admitting he and his players are "unhappy" with the decision, while adding "La Liga has to decide, and we have to accept it."
