Spanish second division game suspended after fan dies in stands

MADRID, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Sunday's Spanish second division match between Sporting Gijon and Leganes was suspended after an 82-year-old supporter died at Sporting's El Molinon Stadium.

After four minutes of play, the referee halted the match after being informed of an incident in the stands in which the supporter fell ill. Ten minutes later, the players withdrew to the dressing rooms.

About 40 minutes after kickoff, Sporting asked supporters to leave the stadium and posted a message on social media saying that "we are sorry to inform that the game has been suspended due to a medical emergency."

"At this moment the priority is the security of everyone at the game, we ask for calm and collaboration while abandoning the ground."

Leganes also posted a message sending "our support to the person who needed treatment."
