WARSAW, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Arsenal have signed Poland international defender Jakub Kiwior from Italian side Spezia, the English club announced on Tuesday.
Reports suggest that Arsenal spent 20 million euros (21.75 million U.S. dollars) on Kiwior, who played in all four of Poland's matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The 20-year-old was at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to see his new club beat Manchester United 3-2 to maintain their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
"I've always dreamed of playing in the Premier League. I knew it wouldn't be easy, and if I got the chance, then I knew I'd have to make the most of it because it was one of my biggest dreams. For me, it's the best league. I'm thrilled to be here," Kiwior said.
"It's huge for me that Arsenal were interested and that I'm able to be here. I'm aware that Arsenal are a massive club in a top league, so I didn't really have to think about much else. I was just ecstatic and really wanted to come," he added.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his delight at signing Kiwior. "It's great that Jakub is joining us. He's a young versatile defender who has shown huge potential and qualities with Spezia in Serie A, and also at international level with Poland," he said.
"Jakub is a player who will give us strength and quality to our defensive unit. We welcome Jakub and his family to Arsenal and look forward to working with him," the Spaniard added.
Arsenal added that Kiwior will wear the number 15 shirt and will immediately join up for training with his new teammates.
