MADRID, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- A total of 10 bodies have been recovered after a migrant boat sank off the Spanish coast on Thursday night, Spain's maritime rescue services said Monday.

Two more bodies from the boat, which was carrying 28 people when it sank some 37 nautical miles west of Cape Trafalgar, were pulled from the sea on Sunday. Three people were rescued on Thursday.

Meanwhile, calm weather over the weekend has led to a huge increase in the number of boats carrying migrants attempting to make the crossing from the north of Africa to either the Spanish mainland or the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Civil Guards and those working with the maritime rescue services intercepted 10 boats carrying 103 people, including five women and 11 minors off the southeast coast of Spain.

According to the latest data published by the Spanish Interior Ministry, 29,388 migrants made sea crossings to Spain from Jan. 1 to Oct. 15, compared to 20,652 who made the same journey in 2020.
