RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Six Flamengo players have tested positive for the coronavirus ahead of the Brazilian club's Copa Libertadores group match against Ecuador's Barcelona SC.

The news came three days after the reigning champions suffered a 5-0 loss to Independiente del Valle in Ecuadorian capital Quito - the Rio de Janeiro side's worst ever defeat in the prestigious club competition.

The Rubronegro have remained in Ecuador ahead of Tuesday's clash in the Pacific port city of Guayaquil.

"The players are asymptomatic and have been isolated under the supervision of the club's medical department," Flamengo tweeted on Sunday night.

Brazilian news outlet O Globo said former Atletico Madrid duo Diego Ribas and Filipe Luis were among the players to test positive. Others were Chile international right-back Mauricio Isla, winger Bruno Henrique, forward Michael Delgado and defender Matheuzinho, the report added.

The players are due to be tested again on Monday before a decision was made about their availability for the match.

South American football governing body CONMEBOL is understood to have ruled out the possibility of postponing the fixture. The entity's coronavirus protocols required clubs to register 50 players in their Copa Libertadores squads to help teams with several coronavirus cases.

If Flamengo's secondary samples prove positive, the players will be isolated for 14 days before being tested again, according to CONMEBOL guidelines.

Flamengo traveled to Ecuador with a 25-man squad but have also reportedly asked registered players who stayed in Rio to be on standby to fly to Ecuador on Monday.
