German Defence Minister, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, has been shot at while travelling in a helicopter above Afghanistan.

As the German minister's craft was landing for a recent surprise visit to troops in the area, shots were fired at three helicopters which were carrying the minister, press and security personnel.

None of the three helicopters in the convoy was hit during the attack, which happened on Friday morning as the minister was visiting German soldiers in the northern area of Kunduz.

Mr Guttenberg held talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Foreign Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak while he was in the country.

He also met US General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of the international force in Afghanistan.
